located in the northeast of Nanjing in proximity to the Second Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge and 5 kilometers away from the downtown, it was recognized as a national economic and technological development zone in 1992 under the approval of the State Council with its focus on four functional areas including industrial manufacturing, bonded warehousing, financial trade and general services as well as a number of in-Zone parks such as the national-level Nanjing Export Processing Zone, the national-level Nanjing Cross-strait Technology Industry Park and the National (Nanjing) Display Components Industrial Park. So far, the Zone has established its East Area which is entirely entrusted with the Qixia Economic Development Zone, the Sanjiangkou Industrial Park, the Longtan Logistics Base and the Xianlin Hi-tech Industrial Park. Expanded to an area of 200 square kilometers concentrating on the construction of optoelectronics industry base and
Yangtze River international shipping and logistics base.
The Zone has so far attracted more than 400 foreign-funded corporations with a total investment of over USD8 billion, where 36 are among the world's top 500 such as LG (South Korea), Sharp and Fujitsu (Japan), Bosch, Siemens and ZF Sachs (Germany), Shell and Philips (Netherlands), and Bunge and Hanesbrands (USA). Besides, a number of large central and provincial/ministry-funded SOEs as well as many private hi-tech companies have established business in the Zone while dozens of universities and scientific institutes including Nanjing University and Nanjing University of Science and Technology have built up industrial bases here.
