Strategic plans for Nanjing’s tourism and exhibition industry are to:
Leverage the brand influences of an ancient cultural capital and a modern metropolis with scenic landscapes, and develop a sightseeing-based and vacation-centered modern tourism industry characterized by special tours.
Vigorously develop new tourism products, accelerate the development of major tourism projects and further optimize public services and supporting services systems for tourism.
Actively attract large Chinese and international exhibition organizations and projects to Nanjing, strongly support the development of local exhibition brands, and cultivate a group of competitive exhibition enterprises.
Encourage the involvement of the private sector and international capital to participate in the development of tourism and exhibitions, promote the development of international tourism and exhibition groups, establish Nanjing tourism and exhibition brands with international competitiveness, and build Nanjing into an internationally-renowned and domestically leading tourism destination and commercial exhibition center.
In 2011, Nanjing’s total tourism revenue was USD 18.4 billion, with a 16.2% increase from the previous year. The city received 73.3166 million domestic and oversea tourists during the year, with a 12.8% increase from the previous year. Among these, the number of inbound tourists was 1.5066 million, with a 15.1% increase from the previous year. Foreign exchange revenue from international tourists reached USD 1.2 billion, with a 22.3% increase from the previous year. The city has 113 star-rated tourist hotels, 51 class A scenic areas, and 502 travel agencies, including 23 travel agencies qualified to organize outbound travel.
In 2011, Nanjing hosted a total of 1,782 large and medium exhibitions and conferences above the designated scale, with a 32% increase from the previous year. The exhibition industry contributed approximately USD 5 billion to the municipal economy.
By 2015, the number of inbound tourists is expected to exceed 3 million and the number of large and medium exhibitions and conferences to exceed 3,000.
In 2012, the annual tourism
revenue reached 127.25 billion RMB with a growth rate of 15.1%. All together
81.13 million tourists came to Nanjing with a growth rate of 10.7%, of which domestic tourists were 79.5 million with
a growth rate of 10.7% and abroad tourists were 1.63 million with a growth rate
of 8.0%. The annual international tourist foreign exchange revenue reached
1.362 billion USD with a growth rate of 13.6%. Tourists going abroad
organized by travel agencies reached 509,600 with a growth rate of 38.6%. The
city owns 115 star-level hotels; 73 tourist resorts of which two are 5A resorts and ten are 4A resorts; 533 travel agencies of all kinds
of which 26 are qualified to organize outbound tourism.
