On January 13, Mr. Kenneth Jarrett, President of Amcham Shanghai paid a visit to NMIPC. Mr. Kong Qiuyun, Director of NMIPC and Mr. Cheng Mingdi, Director of Nanjing Investment Promotion Agency extended warm welcome to Kenneth. The two sides exchanged views on Amcham Shanghai Nanjing Branch and reached a consensus.
Kong Qiuyun briefed the situation of Nanjing’s open economy and social development. “In recent years, Nanjing takes advantage of the 2nd Asian Youth Games and Youth Olympic Games, further improves the city’s infrastructure and civilization. In particular, the newly issued Implementation Opinions on Deepening the Reform of Open Economy System by CPC Nanjing Municipal Committee and Municipal Government, clarifies that Nanjing will firmly grasp the opportunity in the new round opening up, actively working with the Shanghai Free Trade Zone, energetically integrate into the construction of Yangtze Economic belt, orderly allow the inflow of foreign capitals in areas such as medical care, child and aged care, etc. Nanjing is aimed to rank in the front both in China and Jiangsu Province. A pro-business environment that is fair, impartial, stable, predicable, international and law-based will be accessible to foreign investors including American businesses via the implementation of these measures, and thus further enhance the comprehensive competitiveness of Nanjing.”
Kong Qiuyun said, US is the main source of foreign investment in Nanjing. By the end of 2014, a total of 1671 projects had been approved, with an investment volume of $9.5 billion USD, contracted foreign capital of $5.3 billion USD, and actual utilized foreign capital of $2 billion USD. 38 enterprises or branches out of 26 renowned American companies like Ford and GM had been established in Nanjing which saw a sound growth momentum. It is the right time for Amcham Shanghai to set up Nanjing branch. NMIPC will offer fully support and further the cooperation with Amcham Shanghai.
Mr. Kenneth Jarrett discussed with Director Kong on site location, enterprises’ needs and operating model of Nanjing branch. He hoped that Nanjing branch could be established at the 100th anniversary of Amcham Shanghai. He is truly optimistic of the prospect of Nanjing and willing to work together with NMIPC, thus pushing forward the development of Nanjing’s open economy.
Amcham Shanghai was founded in 1915. As a non-profit, non-partisan business organization, it is the third American chamber established outside the US, and develops into the largest American chamber in China and even Asia. At present, Amcham Shanghai has over 3600 members, representing 1600 plus enterprises.
